Amerway Dross-Out Dross Reducing Compound Technical Data Bulletin

Technical Data Sheet

Description:
The Amerway Dross-Out was specially formulated for reducing dross and prevents oxides of solder from forming on the surface of the solder pot on wave solder machines. Many competitive dross products are based on mineral oils and fatty acids which can breakdown and deposit on the surface of printed circuit board assemblies. Dross-Out is a stable, low foaming, high melting product with no flash or fire points to consider. No smoke or fumes are generated when operating temperature is below 500 ºF.
Application:
The following procedure should be performed periodically to reduce solder costs. Amerway Dross-Out should be used when there is an excess of dross that hinders the soldering process, or when a yellowish tin oxide surface is seen on the surface of the solder pot.
  1) With the wave turned off, the temperature should be between 450ºF and 500ºF.
  2) Completely cover the molten solder with approximately 1/8 inch of Dross-Out by sprinkling it over the surface of the solder pot.
  3) Using a spoon or a spatula that will not contaminate the solder, work the Dross-Out into the pot by gently chopping into molten solder.
  4) This process should take about a minute to complete. The Dross-Out will move about the surface of the molten solder and react with oxides of tin and lead converting them back into their metallic state.
  5) After completion of the dross recovery process, remove all remaining dross, dirt and other contaminants with a spoon or spatula. Complete removal of the remaining Dross-Out is recommended.
Safety:
Amerway Dross-Out is a non-flammable product. However, standard precaution for handling acid material should be observed when handling this product.
Packaging:
Amerway Dross-Out is available in 1, 5, 10, 25, and 50 pound containers. This product should be stored in a dry place.
